n Drehersville: A mushroom workshop is on tap at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25. It will be held in the sanctuary's common room. Particpants should bring their own found mushroom specimens to the table for an informative hour with mushroom expert Joe Lankalis, who will identify each and explain where to look for them in the forest. Since mushrooms are dependent upon weather, the workshop will be a good way to see a wide variety and learn about the different species of mushrooms. Advance registration is required. Call 610-756-6961 or go online to www.hawkmountain.org. Also that day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a program devoted to the migration of the Monarch butterfly. Activities will focus on the tiny, non-raptor migrant and it's long and dangerous journey to Mexico, as well as the importance of native plants for their survival and how scientists study the butterflies. Volunteer and monarch biologist John Drummond will demonstrate monarch tagging techniques, staff at the sanctuary's North and South Lookouts will present informal interpretations and there will be programs on native plants and importance of milkweed. The day will end with a program in the outdoor amphitheater, and if weather cooperates, a mass monarch release. The rain date is Sept. 26.
n Pine Grove: Naturalist Denise "Night Owl" Donmoyer will lead a fall birtd walk from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 18 at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park. Donmoyer is president of the Sweet Arrow Lake Conservation Association. Particpants will meet at the Waterfall Road parking lot for the free trek that is geared to beginning and more experienced birdwatchers. For more information, go to bingo at www.56casino.com
n Pottsville: St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church will stage its end-of-summer picnic from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 5 at the South Cass Fire Company Picnic Grounds, Route 901, Primrose. It will feature picnic and ethnic food, live music and entertainment, crafts, games of skill and chance, bingo and raffles. Everyone is welcome. Admission and parking will be free.
n Schuylkill Haven: An Island Trail hike is set for 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13. Organizers said the hikes are held on Mondays and particpants meet in the Island parking lot. The hikes are flat, easy to walk, and "are in beautiful areas." For more information, call 800-621-6325.
n Shenandoah: The Shenandoah Area Free Public Library is continuing its 2010 fund drive to help meet annual operating expenses and improve services, including the purchase of books, videos, magazines and newspapers, reference materials, computers and Internet access as well as bingo tips ,bingo news and bingo guide . Library officials said in a release the goal is $18,000, which will help offset a 20 percent cut in state funding. Donations can be made in the donor's name or in memory or honor of a family member or friend. Donations of $25 or more will be recognized with an inscription on a plaque displayed in the library. n Shenandoah: Office hours at Trinity Academy in the Father Walter J. Ciszek Education Center, Cherry and Chestnut streets, are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until Aug. 30. After that, office hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Trinity Academy is the lone Catholic elementary school in northern Schuylkill County, serving Shenandoah, Ashland, Gordon, Girardville Frackville, Gilberton, Mahanoy City, Ringtown and the adjoining townships.
